Brown Girl and Brown Boy Book Tour stop in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — A nationwide book tour kicked off at a Capitol Museum on Saturday, May 14.

The Brown Girl and Brown Boy Red Carpet Book Tour stopped at the Mississippi Children’s Museum. Dr. Pamela Gurley organized the tour to shine a light on children’s authors, who are often underrepresented in different ways.

Gurley has collaborated with other local authors to bring the kid-friendly red carpet to Jackson with the goal of teaching children social skills, confidence, self-esteem, body positivity and emotional intelligence.

The event included live book readings, educational activities and food.

“It was important to me to celebrate literacy and everything that goes with it. There is art, music and science. It’s really all part of literacy. This event celebrates that in a very holistic way,” Gurley said.

” It’s awesome. Kayden is my best friend, so I love having him in my book. They talk about reading. You read them, you can see all the words, and you have to fathom them,” said author Eric Collins Jr.

The book tour events highlighted the importance of showing the different forms of literacy. The events also gave parents and children a chance to fill their shelves with characters that look like them.

The next stop on the tour will be in Atlanta.
