Nixa school board set to review some books after some parents express concern

Nixa Mo. (KY3) — The Nixa School Board addresses three books at the May 12 school board meeting after some parents expressed concern and submitted calls for the district to remove them from shelves.

According to the school board agenda, the following books have been submitted for reconsideration under KLB board policy (Materials review).

  • Back home by Yaa Gyasi
  • Fun Home: A Tragicomic Family by Alison Bechdel
  • Not all boys are blue by George M. Johnson

“The documents were put through the review committee process and a recommendation was made by each review committee, the results of which were presented to the complainant,” reads the school board’s agenda. “In each of the following three cases, the complainant was not satisfied with the committee’s recommendation and, as such, submitted a written appeal to the Nixa School Board for a final decision.”

The Nixa School District received 17 formal requests for reconsideration of 16 unique individual titles. There were two that were submitted on the same title. The parents have taken their concerns to Facebook groups and say the titles are sexually inappropriate. There are many conflicting views on whether the books should stay or disappear throughout the Nixa community.

“I think it’s really important for us not to censor the books that our kids have the opportunity to get,” said Karen Perry, Nixa Parent. “I don’t think one parent’s opinion should be above other parents.”

“This is the first time in my tenure here and in 16 years that the school board has had a call from the board,” said David Liss of Nixa Schools. “The board will decide and really set a direction for what is considered appropriate with our books.”
