Stunning God of War fan art imagines the game as a comic book

god of war iIt’s full of memorable moments, though one of the most exciting comes at the very end of the game and served as a teaser for what’s to come in the sequel. Clearly inspired by this moment, an artist and God of the war fan named Mark Scicluna created a spectacular comic cover for the game.

The moment in question sees Thor arriving at Kratos and Atreus, wielding his Mjolnir hammer and preparing to fight as a storm gathers above the figures. An iconic visual that has had fans talking for years, many were excited to see what the fight between Kratos and Thor will look like, wondering if it could possibly top the former’s battles with Baldur. With God of War: Ragnarok will be released this year, fans will soon have their answer. For now, though, they can enjoy this piece of art from Scicluna.

With the artist being a former illustrator for Rockstar Games, it makes sense that he’s incredibly talented. There are plenty of cool details to enjoy in their latest work, the most obvious being the recreation of the scene where Thor first appears. Kratos, Atreus, and Mjolnir all translate well to the vintage comic style, with the angle of the scene perfectly recreated. Choosing a vibrant blue for the sky and a yellow for Thor’s lightning bolt makes the piece even more eye-catching.

However, while a comic book-inspired version of God of the warThe ending would be cool on its own, what makes the piece spectacular is the artist’s attention to detail. They go above and beyond when it comes to making the art look like an old fashioned comic book cover, as the text boxes that say “Thor’s Mighty Hammer” and “All in Full Color” add a lot to the room. The title “Ragnarok is Coming” is a brilliant choice, while seeing the faces of Kratos and Atreus in the top left corner should instantly look familiar to comic book collectors.

With a price of 25 cents and an incredibly elegant style God of the war logo both featured on the piece, there’s a lot for fans of the franchise to appreciate. Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of praise for this fan art on Twitter and Reddit, with thousands of likes and upvotes accompanied by supporting comments praising the artist’s style. Perhaps the coolest comment of all came from Santa Monica herself, as the studio’s official Twitter account responded to applaud Scicluna.

While there was some division around Thor’s early design, it will be interesting to see how players feel once they see the character in action. Considering the buildup of Thor’s appearance in the original game, his cruelty will likely make him a significant challenge to Kratos.

God of the war is available now on PC and PS4.
